Q. What is CSR?

A. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the ability for organisations to achieve commercial success by considering the interests of society, and honouring their ethical values by taking responsibility for the impact of their day-to-day business operations on Stakeholders; Shareholders, Customers, Suppliers, Employees, Communities, and the natural environment.

Today's most successful organisations recognise the need and importance to extend beyond their statutory obligations to improve the quality and environmental aspects of their business impacts by doing what they say they do, and when and how they do it whilst attaining profitability, and continually improving business performance.

CSR is receiving growing attention within a variety of organisations, including the European Commission.

Q. What is ISO 9001: 2008?

A. ISO 9001:2008 is the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) Quality Management System standard that provides a best-practice framework for an effective quality management system. It is based on the following eight management principles:

1. Customer focus;

2. Leadership;

3. Involvement of people;

4. Process approach;

5. System approach to management;

6. Continual improvement;

7. Factual approach to decision making;

8. Mutually beneficial supplier relationships.

BS EN ISO 9001: 2008 requirements state that an organisation's QMS must:

  • Demonstrate its ability to consistently provide product that meets Customer, Legal and Regulatory requirements;

  • Aims to enhance Customer satisfaction through the effective application of the QMS;

  • Demonstrates processes for continual improvement of the QMS;

  • Demonstrates the assurance of conformity and applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

According to theBritish Standards Institute (BSI), "it is used by around 897,000 organisations in 170 countries worldwide, and sets the standard not only for quality management systems, but management systems in general.  It also helps all kinds of organisations to effectively manage their business, and succeed through improved customer satisfaction, staff motivation and continual improvement".

Of course the attainment of an effective QMS requires commitment, the right attitude, and the right behavioural aspects to ensure its purpose and success are fufilled.

Is your organisation already registered to ISO 9001: 2000?

Changes to the ISO9001: 2008 standard are very small.  ISO 9001: 2008 will replace ISO 9001:2000.  By the end of 2010, existing certification issued to ISO 9001:2000 will no longer be valid. Customers will need the revised version of ISO 9001 in order to keep their certificates up to date.

Q. What is ISO 14001: 2004?

A. ISO 14001: 2004 is the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) Environmental Management System standard that provides a best-practice framework for an effective environmental management system. It is based on the PDCA Model:

1. Plan;

2. Do;

3. Check;

4. Act.

And incorporates a fifth element, that of 'continual improvement'.

The ISO 14001: 2004 standard requirements include:

  • An Environmental policy;

  • Environmental objectives;

  • Identification of Environmental aspects and impacts.

Of course the attainment of an effective Environmental Management System requires commitment, the right attitude, and the right behavioural aspects to ensure its purpose and success are fufilled.

Q. What is Sustainable Development?

A. The 'Brundtland Commission' coined the term, 'sustainable development', which is defined as development that, 'meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs'.

Most societies seek to achieve economic development to secure higher standards of living, and to protect and enhance their environment; both now and for future generations.  Sustainable development understandably seeks to reconcile these objectives.

So how can organisations help to meet the needs of societies?  Organisations can assist by adopting environmental sustainability strategies, by embracing the concept of personal and professional excellence, and by ensuring that their processes of interaction with the environment are followed with proper regard to their environmental impact.

Q. What is TQEM?

A. Total Quality Environmental Management (TQEM) is a method of applying total quality management principles, tools and techniques to corporate environmental strategies through employee involvement and continuous improvement initiatives.

There are four primary elements to attaining TQEM, these are:

1. Customer identification;

2. Do it right first time;

3. A systems approach;

4. Continuous improvement.
